Australian Robbie McEwen burst clear of his challengers in the finishing straight to ride into Namur ahead of the peloton and claim the second stage of the Tour de France.

The Lotto-Domo rider took advantage of a skirmish behind him to claim victory, with Norwegian Thor Hushovd, competing for Credit Agricole, finishing second.

Jean-Patrick Nazon, of France, was third for AG2R Prevoyance.

Sligoman Mark Scanlon, rising his first Tour, was placed 36th and remainins in 36th place in the overall standings.

The AG2R Prevoyance rider is 39th in the green jersey points classification.

Meanwhile Hushovd now holds the overall leader’s yellow jersey – the first Norwegian to do so – after this 197km, predominantly-Belgian stage, which began in Charleroi and finished in Namur, passing through France in the mid-section of the stage.
