Ireland gives Peter Foster the boot

Australian conman Peter Foster was today being deported from Ireland after he was refused entry to the country by immigration officials at Dublin Airport.

He was stopped by immigration police when he arrived on a flight from France yesterday afternoon, gardai said.

Foster, who advised Cherie Blair over the purchase of two flats in Bristol, is thought to have been kept overnight at a holding centre in the city’s Mountjoy Prison.

“A non-national in his 40s was refused leave to land at Dublin Airport by immigration officials this afternoon when he disembarked a flight from France,” gardai said in a statement yesterday.

“It is expected that he will be detained overnight and returned to his country.”

It was not clear whether Foster would be sent back to France or returned to his native Australia.

Foster had been splitting his time between Ireland and Spain while writing his autobiography.

Earlier this month he dropped his appeal against deportation from Britain.

His lawyers were said to have been concerned that any technicality could be exploited if he continued his fight.

Downing Street’s credibility was damaged by revelations about Foster’s links with the Prime Minister’s wife.

Number 10 initially denied he had helped Mrs Blair purchase two flats but was later forced to admit his role.
