The airlift of hundreds of al-Qaida prisoners to a US Military base in Cuba is underway.

The first of the prisoners were flown from Afghanistan chained to their seats in a specially converted aircraft before arriving at the base surrounded by armed troops.

The Republic of Cuba has announced it is willing to provide medical assistance for the Afghan and al-Qaida prisoners.

US Defence Secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, has said the men are not prisoners of war and they will not be mistreated.
