The Government is reportedly planning to push through redundancies in Institutes of Technology where there are "surplus" lecturers.

The Irish Independent said it has seen letters sent by the Department of Education targeting members of the Teachers Union of Ireland (TUI).

The TUI rejected the Croke Park deal on public sector pay and is seen as having isolated itself as a result.

The "surplus" staff are mainly involved in teaching apprentices, whose numbers have plummeted in recent years.
