Brad Gilbert will focus on making Andy Murray “physically stronger” in his first year as the Scot’s coach, outlining the hard work that lies ahead for the youngster.
Gilbert, whose acclaimed manual Winning Ugly taught players how to use mental strength to overcome more naturally talented opponents, was appointed by the the Lawn Tennis Association yesterday.
“There’s no magic pill to take that makes you a better player. Andy needs to become physically stronger and over the next year that will be a big focus for us,” said Gilbert in a column for The Times.
To address Murray’s fitness, Gilbert will have the 19-year-old working early in the morning, although he does not expect changes to occur until after the US Open in September.
He added: “If Andy Murray isn’t an early-morning person, that’s going to change.
“The best time to make changes will be after the Open. It’s hard to make any real big impressions when he is going straight into tournaments.”
