FF select two candidates for election in West Limerick

The Fianna Fáil party has selected two candidates to contest the next General Election in the West Limerick constituency.

The Fianna Fáil party has selected two candidates to contest the next General Election in the West Limerick constituency.

Both sitting TD, Deputy John Cregan, and Limerick County Councillor, Niall Collins, were unanimously selected at a party convention in the Rathkeale House Hotel.

Cllr Collins is a nephew of Fianna Fáil TD, Michael Collins, who recently announced that he would not contest the General Election.

Deputy Collins, who was first elected to the Dáil in 1997, resigned from the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party in 2003 after it emerged that he was on a list of tax defaulters.

His nephew 33-year-old Cllr Niall Collins, trained as an accountant with Ernst & Young and now works as Deputy CEO of the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board.

Cllr Collins, who is a member of Limerick County Council for the Bruff electoral area, said the party faced a stiff challenge to retain two Fianna Fáil seats in the West Limerick constituency.

Mr Collins said: "I'm under no illusion with the task I have at hand.

"We have a big job to retain our two seats here but I`m confident that I`ll be able to give it my all to secure a second seat for Fianna Fáil."

Fine Gael TD, Dan Neville, currently holds the third seat in the three-seat West Limerick constituency.
