Report finds some UN Peacekeepers barter goods for sex

A UN report has found that peacekeepers in Haiti and Liberia barter goods for sex with women and children.

It has found that 480 sexual exploitation and abuse claims were made between 2008 and 2013.

UN Secretary General Ban ki-Moon has ordered a review of complaints made against soldiers.

This investigation by the UN's Internal Oversight Services details hundreds of cases of abuse by UN peacekeepers of women and children in some of the world's poorest countries.

It has found that hunger and poverty were exploited by UN personnel - who bartered money, jewellery, food and mobile phones for sex.

Almost a third of the 480 incidents in Haiti and Liberia involve children, and support for victims was described as "severely deficient".

The UN has 125,000 peacekeepers deployed around the world, and Secretary General Ban ki-Moon has already moved to commission a review into the complaints.
