Caldra finally got a win on the board at his third attempt when he lifted the first division of the Stella Artois Maiden Auction Stakes at Salisbury.
At the beginning of the season trainer Sylvester Kirk regarded Caldra in the same league as his stable star Elhamri, but the son of Elnadim appeared to be going backwards after disappointing at Folkestone in June.
However, connections decided to geld Caldra and the operation seemed to have worked the oracle as the 5-1 chance powered to a half-length success over Duke Of Tuscany in the hands of Jamie Spencer.
Kirk said: “He really disappointed me on fast ground at Folkestone after which we decided to have the snip done.
“The operation has calmed him down and this was overdue as I thought he was better than Elhamri at the beginning of the year.”
Spencer described the ground as being on the soft side of good, adding that his mount would prefer better conditions in an ideal situation.
