The White House has been briefly evacuated for the first time since the September 11 attacks.

Staff were told by security agents that an unidentified aircraft was spotted circling in the restricted airspace overhead.

Within 15 minutes of the evacuation staff were allowed to return to the building.

The evacuation was ordered just after George W Bush returned to a building from a Republican fund-raising event.

The incident occurred just hours after a separate incident in which the nearby Federal Reserve building was evacuated because of a suspicious package, which turned out to be harmless.

On September 11 the building was thought to be a target of one of the hijacked planes used in the attacks on New York and Washington.
