Colin Montgomerie found a new way to get out of trouble today – hand your club to a spectator.
In the first official practice round for the Ryder Cup Montgomerie was playing with Lee Westwood against Thomas Bjorn and Darren Clarke.
At the 208-yard 12th the Scot missed the green to the right and finished in deep rough, but as he arrived at the spot the fan said: “No bother.”
Montgomerie laughed, then offered him the club – and watched as the man almost chipped in.
“He was only a few inches away. It was some shot because the ball was in a bad lie,” said Montgomerie at the end of a round which saw him and Westwood earn £200 each by winning three and two.
