Soccer: Kanchelskis arrival imminent

Andrei Kanchelskis is expected to arrive at Maine Road on Monday, ready to raise Manchester City's profile in the Premiership and FA Cup.

Andrei Kanchelskis is expected to arrive at Maine Road on Monday, ready to raise Manchester City's profile in the Premiership and FA Cup.

Manager Joe Royle will assess his fitness before deciding whether to play the experienced Russian winger against Liverpool on Wednesday.

The City boss may be reluctant to change a winning side following Saturday's FA Cup victory over Coventry.

But he knows that Kanchelskis, a loan signing from Rangers, is a player who can turn a game with his pace and skill.

Despite his relief at getting a home victory, Royle admits City rode their luck to secure a place in the fifth round.

"He is expected on Monday," said Royle.

"He is looking forward to it and is not Cup-tied.

"Andrei is a little bit unsure about his match fitness but is due to train with us tomorrow.

"We will see then about his readiness for either Wednesday against Liverpool or Saturday's trip to Middlesbrough.

"I know Andrei well. Bringing him in is a qualified gamble. He is 32 now.

"I have not seen him personally for a few months but I know he is a fit player and what he can give us."

City captain Alfie Haaland believes Kanchelskis will be a welcome addition to the squad, having played against him during his time at Nottingham Forest.

"Kanchelskis is certainly one of the quicker ones, and I look forward to seeing him in action," said the Norwegian midfielder.

"Everyone knows what a great player he is when he is at his best. He is sure to get a warm welcome from the lads."
