Cold Mountain, starring Jude Law and Nicole Kidman, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, Mystic River and Seabiscuit were nominated as best dramatic film.

Helen Mirren was nominated for best actress in a comedy for Calendar Girls. Diane Keaton, for Something’s Gotta Give, and Jamie Lee Curtis, for Freaky Friday, were also nominated in the same category.

Albert Finney, Renee Zellweger, Hope Davis and Alec Baldwin for supporting performances in a film.

Finney was nominated for playing a tall-tale teller in Big Fish.

Zellweger’s nomination was for her role as a tough mountain woman in Cold Mountain and Davis, as the wife of a dowdy comic book scribe in American Splendour.

Baldwin was recognised for playing a casino boss in The Cooler.

The Reagans, which CBS dropped after admirers of the former first family complained that it dwelled on the negative, received made-for-TV movie nominations for James Brolin and Judy Davis – who played former President Reagan and first lady Nancy.

The BBC series The Office has been nominated in the TV comedy category as has its star, Ricky Gervais.

The Golden Globes are seen as a pointer to the more prestigious Oscars.
