It has emerged that a candidate for Ian Paisley's DUP in next Wednesday's Northern elections has a string of convictions for sectarian offences.

It has emerged that a candidate for Ian Paisley's DUP in next Wednesday's Northern elections has a string of convictions for sectarian offences.

The party has been accusing its arch rivals in the Ulster Unionists of being "soft" on republicans - but the SDLP said this leaves the DUP exposed as hypocrites.

John Smyth, the DUP candidate in South Antrim, was convicted of bomb-making and several other charges in 1977.
