British Prime Minister Tony Blair today insisted Peter Foster’s deportation case had been “handled entirely properly”.

His comment came after it emerged that his wife Cherie had telephoned the convicted fraudster’s solicitors to reassure Mr Foster’s girlfriend Carole Caplin about the immigration proceedings.

In a reply to a letter from Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith’s urging him to clear up three key points of the affair, the Prime Minister said: “The Home Office have already made it clear that no political interference has taken place in this case.”

He also rejected Mr Duncan Smith’s claims that a statement had been issued by Number 10 denying that there was any cause for concern about associates of Mrs Blair.
