A senior IRA figure has appeared in court in Spain on foot of an extradition request from the Irish authorities in connection with alleged child abuse.

A senior IRA figure has appeared in court in Spain on foot of an extradition request from the Irish authorities in connection with alleged child abuse.

It is reported that he could face up to four charges in connection with historic abuse allegations.

The man, who is originally from the North, was arrested by Spanish police in Alicante before appearing in court in Madrid yesterday.

He is now in custody pending further proceedings.
