The President of the European Commission has said that he is anxious about the Irish vote for the Nice Treaty.

While Mr. Romano Prodi says that he is worried, he is however confident about European expansion over the next few years.

Speaking to a French newspaper, Mr. Prodi said that the greatest obstacle was the Irish vote to inclusion of 10 new countries in the EU.

It is expected that there will be a second referendum in October for the Nice Treaty. However, the treaty itself will expire if not signed by all members of the EU by the end of 2002.

Mr. Prodi has stated recently that he believes the guarantee of Irish neutrality will encourage people to vote for the treaty.
