Premiership: Taylor aiming to win back Villa fans

New Aston Villa manager Graham Taylor is looking to attract the missing thousands back to the terraces by adopting a go-for-broke policy on the pitch to try and secure a European spot this season.

Taylor wants to persuade the fans to come back through the turnstiles and achieve regular gates of 37-38,000 by playing high tempo, attack-minded, two-touch football.

He is prepared to risk losing as he attempts to put together the string of victories Villa need to cement down at least a UEFA Cup spot.

That will be in stark contrast to some of the football Villa have been serving up at various times under Brian Little and John Gregory.

Taylor's pursuit of that European dream will more likely than not be striven for with the current squad, and he is not envisaging bringing in any new players between now and the end of the season.

He is behind the strategy of Doug Ellis and the board in only spending what they can afford - in contrast to Gregory, who was disappointed not to be given extra funds to strengthen his squad.

Taylor, who has ended his self-imposed exile from management to return to Villa, said: "We've got to find a way, with a 42,000 stadium, where we can attract regular 37-38,000 gates.

"We have to ask 'Is there something on the pitch we can do to achieve that?'

"We'll be prepared to lose a game now and then by trying to win it and we'll have to see whether that will bring in extra thousands.

"I'd like us to have a go at playing a quicker tempo, and you have to have good players to play that way. We've seen it with Manchester United. I want players to 'get it, give it and go'.

"I have a reputation for that. You need good players to play two-touch football going forward. Everyone can play that way going sideways and backwards.

"If we actually aim to win a game, we might do it. If we risk losing to try and win, at least people can say we are giving it a real go - and we need victories to try and get into Europe."

Taylor ultimately wants Villa to start challenging the likes of Manchester United by the conclusion of his initial two-and-a-half-year contract but knows the economics of the club are a crucial issue.

He said: "We've got to want the league and we've got to act like that - but we've got to do it within the range of our income.

"I can look back over the last four or five years and look at the income spent by the top five clubs, look at the income spent by Aston Villa and look at the expenditure.

"I would guarantee that in terms of the percentage of expenditure against income, Villa have done it well. You can't be bringing in just so much and then spending as much as other clubs who are bringing in more.

"This club has been achieving. It's averaging sixth place over the 10 years of the Premiership. Now it's about the next step. But the next step just doesn't mean throwing money everywhere.

"There has always been investment in this club in one shape or another. It's not the transfer fees but the salaries that are the killer, and then you add on how much you've spent and agents fees etc.

"I know the financial position of this club, and it is most unlikely we're going to buy a new player between now and the end of the season when I'm settling in.

"But what we do have is a group of players I hope to be able to encourage to do things."
