Blackburn winger Damien Duff could be in line for a surprise recall just weeks after being told he would be out for the rest of the season.
The young Irish international pulled his hamstring in a match against Fulham earlier this month and seemed set to miss the run-in for promotion-chasing Rovers.
However, he could now play in Wednesday’s derby with Preston North End at Deepdale.
Speaking after receiving an award for Rovers’ goal of the season, Duff said: "I start training today and should be able to play on Wednesday. I’m really looking forward to the game".
Graeme Souness’ side need only one more win to return to the Premiership, but they are likely to be without playmaker Eyal Berkovic, stretchered off in yesterday’s 3-1 triumph over Portsmouth.
"Eyal’s injury makes it three hamstring problems at the moment," said Souness.
"Him, Alan Mahon and Damien have all suffered over the last couple of weeks but Damien should be okay for Wednesday."
