President Barack Obama has nominated James Comey to be the new FBI director.
Mr Comey was the number two Justice Department official under former Republican president George W Bush.
Mr Obama said Mr Comey is a model of “fierce independence and deep integrity”.
Mr Comey gained attention for blocking efforts by the Bush White House to re-authorise a no-warrant wire-tapping programme in 2004.
If confirmed by the Senate, he would replace Robert Mueller and serve a 10-year term.
Mr Obama said that Mr Mueller displayed a “steady hand and strong leadership” during his time at the head of the FBI.
