Bill Clinton is to feature in a major BBC series about Northern Ireland.

The former US President is interviewed in BBC2's four-part documentary Endgame In Ireland.

The programme tells the inside story of how politicians and paramilitary leaders made it to the negotiating table in the peace process.

Clinton took part in the programme not long after his presidency ended.

He said: "Gerry Adams said he still had people in the IRA that didn't really believe in the principle of consent: they wanted out of Great Britain.

"I told him he was going to have to wait for the Catholic birthrate to change the electorate for that to happen."

Clinton went on to describe why he decided to reverse policy against the advice of the State Department and the British.

The programme also features ex-Prime Minister John Major, Peter Mandelson, Mo Mowlam, David Trimble, Gerry Adams, Martin McGuinness and Albert Reynolds.

Endgame In Ireland is on BBC2 on June 24.
