Golf: Westwood hopes new to swing to glory

Lee Westwood believes the swing which made him Europe's number one last season is not good enough to take him to major glory.

Lee Westwood believes the swing which made him Europe's number one last season is not good enough to take him to major glory.

So he has decided to revamp it. For Nick Faldo in the 1980s it was a long process, but he emerged from it to win three Opens and three Masters.

Westwood, winner of 18 titles in the last three years, hopes for the same outcome - but also hopes there won't be the same wait.

The 28-year-old from Worksop - 43rd, 57th and 52nd in his last three tournaments - went into the second round of the Volvo PGA championship at Wentworth one over par, 10 adrift of Argentina's Angel Cabrera and probably needing at most a 70 to survive the cut.

After his mixture of "rubbish and really rubbish" playing, Westwood explained his thinking for altering his game.

"I'm working on alignment, posture, takeaway," he said. "I'm not bothered that I'm not playing well. I accept that making these changes will be difficult for a while.

"I'm hoping to be a better player. I didn't think I was going to win a major playing the way I was before.

"It was a conclusion I came to myself. There's no point listening to anyone else on subjects like that. I'm the only one that counts."

Westwood led the 1999 Masters with nine holes to play before dropping to sixth and was fifth in last June's US Open, but a massive 17 shots behind Tiger Woods.

He is one of only a handful of players to give Woods a lead going into the last round and beat him.

He did it with a closing 64 at the Deutsche Bank-SAP Open in Germany last year.

He has also won all around the world - including on the US Tour, four times in Japan and the Australian Open.

Becoming a father last month and missing the Masters as a result took a chunk out of his early season, but he adds: "I'm not rusty. I'm just playing poorly."
