Zimbabwe rejects US food offer

Zimbabwe, facing severe food shortages, has turned away a US donation of 10,000 tons of corn because it was not certified as free from genetic modification.

Zimbabwe, facing severe food shortages, has turned away a US donation of 10,000 tons of corn because it was not certified as free from genetic modification.

The food was diverted instead to neighbouring Zambia, Mozambique and Malawi, said the US Embassy in Harare.

The Famine Early Warning System Network estimates nearly one fourth of Zimbabwe’s 12.5m people are currently facing hunger.

The World Food Programme estimates half the population will need food aid to avert starvation this year.
