Gardaí issue warning over road conditions

Gardaí today warned of hazardous conditions across the country due to the ongoing freeze and said the cold snap was set to persist into next week.

Motorists were tonight warned to take extreme care with parts of Dublin, the M7 at Portlaoise and the N3 outside Navan and Kells in Co Meath worst hit.

Met Eireann is forecasting more low temperatures overnight, plummeting to minus 10 degrees in some parts.

“The first week in 2010 is set to be bitterly cold,” said a Garda spokesman.

“Heavy snow showers are likely and very severe frosts.

“Daytime temperatures are predicted just above freezing and icy conditions persisting all day in many areas and night-time temperatures will fall from minus 5C (23F) to minus 10C (14F) in some parts of the country.

“These weather conditions will make travelling treacherous and dangerous for all road users.”

Meanwhile a man died in hospital today following a car crash in Co Limerick.

The 24-year-old suffered fatal injuries in the accident on a minor road in Finnoe, near Ballyhahill, in the early hours of yesterday.

The car he was driving left the road and careered into a ditch. No other vehicles were involved.

He was taken to Limerick Regional Hospital where he died this afternoon.
