At least 12 killed in China riots

At least 12 people have been killed in riots in north-west China, state media reported.

The Xinhua News Agency said rioters armed with knives attacked victims in Yecheng county outside the city of Kashgar.

The report said the rioters killed 10 people and police shot dead two of the assailants. It said police were chasing others involved in the attacks.

No details were given about what might have provoked the violence.

The area has been smothered in stifling security ever since deadly 2009 riots in the regional capital of Urumqi, pitting the native Turkish Muslim Uighur ethnicity against migrants from China’s majority Han.
