The opposition is claiming the EU's so-called Fiscal Compact will force the Government to introduce even tougher budgets in the years ahead.
Ahead of tomorrow's critical EU summit on the deal, Fianna Fáil is urging the Taoiseach to spell out the implications of the compact, which makes deficit reduction a legal requirement for eurozone governments.
A Red C poll in today's Sunday Business Post indicates the deal would pass by only a slim majority if it were put to a referendum here.
Fianna Fáil finance spokesperson Michael McGrath said Enda Kenny looked set to sign Ireland up to an "aggressive" deficit reduction programme, over an unknown timeframe and without regard to domestic economic conditions.
