Howlin: SF have obligation to aid recovery

Public Expenditure Minister Brendan Howlin has accused Sinn Féin of adhering to a "flat earth" policy in relation to the proposed disposal of state assets.

Public Expenditure Minister Brendan Howlin has accused Sinn Féin of adhering to a "flat earth" policy in relation to the proposed disposal of state assets.

Minister Howlin was speaking during a private members motion in the Dáil last night.

Sinn Féin's Dessie Ellis accused the coalition of giving up on job creation, saying people are dying in their homes because of decisions this Government has taken.

In response to Deputy Ellis, Minister Howlin said Sinn Féin has to realise that it has a part to play in Ireland's recovery.

"Sinn Féin members adhere to the 'flat earth' policy in respect of state assets," he said.

"That seems to be the mantra.

"In a national crisis there is an obligation, even on Sinn Féin, to work towards the recovery of this country as the Government is," he added.

"And despite your best efforts, we are going to succeed."
