Government leaves Euro ’08 decision up to GAA

The Minister for Finance says it is up to the GAA if they want to allow Croke Park be used for soccer if Ireland is successful in it’s bid to host the 2008 European Soccer Championships.

The Minister for Finance says it is up to the GAA if they want to allow Croke Park be used for soccer if Ireland is successful in it’s bid to host the 2008 European Soccer Championships.

Charlie McCreevy was speaking at Croke Park today and was responding to newspaper reports that Government funding to the GAA would not be honoured unless the GAA made it’s HQ available for soccer.

Minister McCreevy said the matter is one for the GAA congress to decide.

“They are like a large political party, they can make their own decisions and the Government decided last Tuesday to put forward that particular view, but it is totally up to the GAA to decide what they want to do with their own magnificent stadium,” he said.
