Legendary Kerry footballer John Egan, who won six All-Ireland SFC titles and nine Munster SFC crowns, has passed away at the age of 59.

Egan was a corner forward of very high regard whose senior inter-county career lasted between 1973 and 1984. He died at his home in Cork and is survived by his wife Mary, son John and daughter Maureen.

Speaking on behalf of the Kerry GAA community, Kerry County Committee Chairman Patrick O'Sullivan expressed his sorrow on the passing of one of the county's true heroes.

He extended his deepest sympathies to John's family and friends along with his beloved club Sneem.

Egan, Kerry's captain when they were foiled by Offaly in the 1982 All-Ireland final, played 41 times in the Championship for the Kingdom. He was a key figure in their All-Ireland four in-a-row (1978 to 1981).

He scored 14 goals and 59 points during his Championship career, and accumulated 21-59 in 65 league appearances.

A retired Garda, his list of footballing honours also included four National League titles, four Railway Cup successes with Munster and five All-Star awards.

Egan's death follows that of another former Kerry footballer over the weekend. Dermot Hanafin, a talented midfielder in his day, has died. The Castleisland clubman was an All-Ireland SFC winner with Kerry in 1953.
