Antrim and Wexford 'unlikely' to be relegated
GAA Director General Pauric Duffy expects that neither Antrim nor Wexford will be relegated from the Liam McCarthy Cup.
The two sides were set to meet in a relegation play-off under a system which has attracted much criticism from the two counties. Carlow were set to take the place of the losing team in the Championship, with the loser dropping to the Christy Ring Cup.
The issue is set to be discussed at a Central Council meeting on August 22, but Duffy said he expected the GAA would allow all teams to compete in the Championship proper.
“What we're talking about is the 12 teams that are there at the moment plus Carlow,” Mr Duffy said.
“I think the chances are that Antrim and Wexford will not be relegated and that they wouldn't even face a match, because the DRA said they want Carlow in the competition and the GAA generally wants Antrim and Wexford in the competition.
“I think we will look at a way of having13 teams in it, and we'll try and fix it up at the Central Council meeting.”
