Svensson out to prove worth

Mathias Svensson is out to prove both he and Norwich can cut it in the Barclays Premiership.

The big Swedish centre-forward has struggled to make an impact since helping the Norfolk side win last season’s First Division championship following a Christmas move from Derby.

Svensson found himself having to make do with a place on the bench in recent weeks, but produced a spirited second-half display when he was brought on against Everton as Norwich fought back from two goals down, only to eventually lose 3-2 at Carrow Road at the weekend.

Nigel Worthington is set to hand the 30-year-old his first start in more than two months for Wednesday night’s Carling Cup trip to Newcastle.

And Svensson is determined to show he has what it takes as a Premier League striker.

“I had a bit of a tough time when I started the first two games when I did not play the best and have been out of the team since,” Svensson told The Press Association.

“It is now up to me to prove them wrong.

“I am feeling better. I had a little operation in the summer and was a bit behind the other boys, and so have just been catching them up in the last two or three weeks and it is showing more and more now.

“That is all I can do at the moment, to try and show the manager that I want to play and want to be involved.

“I have to play the way I can do and the manager has to use me as I can play, and I just have to keep going. My chance will come again.”

Norwich fell back into the relegation zone after Saturday’s defeat extended their winless Premiership run to 10 matches.

Svensson, though, believes it is only a matter of time before the spirited performances given by Worthington’s men yield a maiden victory in the league.

“We still haven’t won a game, but we are playing decent football and people can’t take that away from us,” he said.

“We got back to 2-2 and had chances to win the game, we just could not put them away.

“If we play like we did in the second half for 90 minutes then we can upset a lot of teams in this division.”

Leon McKenzie got his account up and running with Norwich’s first goal at the start of the second half against Everton, but later limped off with a thigh strain and is a major doubt for Wednesday’s match.

Regardless of whether the former Peterborough striker recovers in time, Worthington is set to give Svensson another chance to shine.

“Matt will start the game,” revealed the Norwich boss.

“He came on Saturday and did exceptionally well and showed exactly the sort of player he is.

“He got involved in the game right from the off, showed a lot of energy and caused Everton a lot of problems. That’s what we’re looking for from him.

“We must remember that he had a little knee operation in the summer and was doing his rehab when we came back for pre-season. He was playing catch-up for some time from a fitness level point of view.

“But he has worked very hard and now he’s back up there. He knows what he has got to do.”

Simon Charlton is also a major doubt for the Canaries’ midweek trip to Tyneside, so utility man Gary Doherty – who scored while playing up front at St James’ Park during the 2-2 Premiership encounter back in August – could come into the centre of defence.
