Sub-sea power cable 'bringing a flood of cheap UK power into Ireland'
Bord Gáis Energy has said the new sub-sea power cable between Ireland and Britain is helping to keep electricity prices low.
Wholesale electricity prices fell by 11% last month with natural gas and coal prices in Britain among the factors causing the drop.
John Heffernan, power trader with Bord Gáis Energy, said that cheap energy is now easily brought to Ireland through the new interconnector, and consumers are reaping the benefits.
He said two grids are now connected, the 500MW lines between Wales and the Republic of Ireland which is "bringing a flood of cheap UK power coming into Ireland".
Mr Heffernan said that is keeping a downward pressure on wholesale electricity prices in the month of May.
