Green Party leader Trevor Sargent has claimed that the ramifications of public-private partnerships (PPPs) will come to back to haunt future generations of Irish people.
The Government has established several PPPs to help fund infrastructural projects and is planning more in the future.
Under the schemes, the private sector bolsters public investment in major projects in return for a share of the profits and a stake in how the projects are run.
Mr Sargent said this type of scheme allows certain individuals to benefit financially from state-backed projects designed to provide a public service.
The Green Party leader also expressed concern that decisions relating to these projects, particularly in the construction sector, are not transparent enough and could ultimately lead to costly investigations in years to come.
"I believe in the future we are going to see a situation where large organisations will be investigated along with the Government of the day to see how a decision was made," he said.
