Charlton gain second home win of season

Paul Konchesky’s arrival lit up a dull match at The Valley and provided Charlton with only a second home win of the season.

Konchesky curled in a splendid 25-yard free-kick just short of the hour to instil some vigour into Alan Curbishley’s side.

Although David Thompson’s immediate equaliser threatened to deny them, however, another Konchesky dead-ball delivery confirmed victory as Richard Rufus headed in and Jason Euell lashed in a howitzer in the final minute.

Charlton, who had scored just five goals in their previous 11 matches and not scored more than twice in a match all season, were rewarded for fielding three attackers.

Euell, the most lively, burst into the area inside the first minute and brought the first save from stand-in keeper Alan Kelly, sprawling across his six-yard box to intercept a low cross-shot.

A similar surge by Damien Duff at the other end saw the Republic of Ireland winger waltz around Jon Fortune inside the area but Duff’s international colleague Dean Kiely blocked the shot, from a narrow angle, at the base of his right-hand post.

The conditions did not help the flow of the match, with rain streaming down in south-east London at kick-off.

Neither did a blight of injuries in both camps which denied Charlton the influential Claus Jensen and summer signing Gary Rowett, among others, and Blackburn captain Garry Flitcroft and goalkeeper Brad Friedel while Tugay was suspended.

Euell, operating just behind Shaun Bartlett and Kevin Lisbie, was proving Charlton’s most likely outlet for a goal and it took a brilliantly-timed interception from Nils-Eric Johansson, midway through the first period, to cut out another dangerous cross from the left.

Given the injury blight affecting both sides, defenders surprisingly remained on top although Andy Cole did feel aggrieved that referee Uriah Rennie adjudged Jon Fortune’s clumsy challenge in the area not to be worthy of a penalty.

Charlton sought the forehead of Bartlett with regularity in a search for a breakthrough and from one knockdown by the South African international Lisbie might have done better but failed to connect fully with an attempted back-heel from six yards.

Then, seconds later, a quick Blackburn break threatened a goal at the other end but Cole, who out-manoeuvred Mark Fish to bring down Duff’s flighted pass, poked wide on the turn.

Rovers team-mate Thompson came even closer as his fierce shot nestled in the side netting.

With half-time approaching, Charlton threatened again as Scott Parker’s corner sought Bartlett’s aerial ability – yet no-one was alert to his near-post flick-on.

And right on the interval, Blackburn’s acting captain David Dunn struck a powerful drive just the wrong side of an upright.

It has been a miserable start to the Premiership campaign for Charlton at The Valley, where they lost their opening four matches.

Within seconds of the restart they may have been trailing on home turf once again as Richard Rufus missed a through ball and Luke Young was muscled aside by Egil Ostenstad, whose initial shot was repelled by Kiely’s legs before the Norwegian striker nodded against the base of an upright.

Blackburn, whose away form has seen them win three times away from Ewood Park and conceded just five goals in six games, were clearly intent on adding a fourth victory.

With Ostenstad’s physical presence proving an increased threat, a foul on the striker resulted in Thompson curling a free-kick straight into Kiely’s arms.

Yet it was Curbishley’s side that took a lead just short of the hour through half-time substitute Konchesky.

When Parker’s run from deep was halted by a crude lunge from Todd, which earned a booking, the England Under-21 international stepped up to curl into Kelly’s top right-hand corner.

Charlton’s celebrations were short-lived, however, as Blackburn registered an immediate leveller with an equally impressive strike from Thompson.

The former Liverpool midfielder, a late developer who has recently caught the attention of England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, flicked on a long clearance from Kelly and took Cole’s lay-off in his stride to dispatch the ball past Kiely from 20 yards.

As the minutes drew on the contest became an increasingly flurried affair and Lisbie should have restored Charlton’s advantage 18 minutes from time when Radostin Kishishev lofted over Blackburn’s backline – but the Jamaican forward could only find the side-netting from a tight angle, after rounding Kelly.

Yet within a minute the London club were back in the lead with Konchesky, on for Fortune, again involved.

This time, his deep right-wing corner found Rufus and a looping header from 12 yards arced over the sprawling Kelly and under the bar.

Blackburn tested Charlton nerves with a late rally – the home side had all 11 men behind the ball in the last 10 minutes.

But Euell relieved the tension in the final minute as he let fly from long distance, his shot beating Kelly for pace.
