Central to step up in trip
Howard Johnson’s Norfolk Stakes winner South Central is likely to be stepped up in trip to six furlongs for his next start.
The unbeaten colt, who showed blistering speed on his debut at Carlisle when winning by 13 lengths, needed battling qualities to prevail at the Royal meeting.
Under a storming ride from Robert Winston, the colt gave Johnson his second Royal winner after Masta Plasta took the same race when the meeting was run at York in 2005.
“We knew he was a nice horse, but we were not sure how that Carlisle form was going to work out,” said Graham Wylie, who in partnership with Johnson owns the horse under the Transcend Bloodstock banner.
“The ground was probably too fast for him at Ascot and we’ll probably step him up to six furlongs next time.
“We’ve nothing in mind but he’ll have a break now and we’ll find a nice six-furlong race for him with a bit of cut in the ground,” he told Racing UK.
