Kerry forward Kieran Donaghy has today apologised for his one-fingered salute to Mayo fans in the Kingdom defeat at the weekend, saying it will never happen again.

Speaking at the launch of the Ulster Bank's new sponsorship of the All-Ireland Football Championship, the Kerry All-Star described the incident as "a mistake on both parts".

The incident occurred after Donaghy's late effort for an equalising point went wide and he saw a piece of wood sail inches past him and land on the ground, to which the Austin Stacks man reacted with the controversial gesture.

The All-Ireland champions lost the game by a point, 0-16 to 1-12, to a Mayo side Donaghy says were "better on the day".

Donaghy said that he now hopes to put the incident behind him when he lines out against Laois in the NFL the weekend after next.
