An Irish soldier and garda on peacekeeping duties in Bosnia have been injured in an outbreak of violence.

The pair were hurt as Nato-led troops helped police seize a bank in the town of Mostar that was occupied by Croat separatists.

Lieutenant Colonel Tom Behan was pulled from his car and manhandled during rioting after the incident.

Around 18 Nato personnel also received slight injuries during the violence.

The garda was understood to have been on duty inside the bank and sustained a broken rib.

An Irish defence forces spokesman in Dublin said Colonel Behan was one of two Irish officers on a European Union monitoring mission in Mostar.

He had been conducting a routine patrol in the area when the rioting broke out.

Garda Eamonn Connaire, 44, from Co Clare, is being treated in a military hospital.
