Wayne Rooney has committed his long-term future to his beloved Everton after it was announced tonight he had signed a new contract with the Merseyside club until the end of the 2005-06 season.

The 17-year-old has been a revelation in his first season as a professional, scoring a stunning goal in October to end Arsenal’s 30-match unbeaten run and in the process make himself the youngest scorer to that date in the Barclaycard Premiership at just 16.

The youngster’s signature on his first professional contract was initially delayed as he changed agent, with his interests now being handled by Paul Stretford of the ProActive agency.
