Barcelona defender Michael Reiziger has rejected a loan move to Manchester City.
The Dutch international claims he is only interested in a permanent deal.
That looks highly unlikely as City manager Kevin Keegan has apparently earmarked most of his transfer budget for a £7.5million move for Leeds striker Robbie Fowler.
Reiziger called a press conference in Spain to explain his reasons.
Speaking about the possibility of going on loan to City he said: “It will be difficult. I have a family and it will not be good to go for just four months.
“Manchester City are an interesting club with ambition – an ambition to play in Europe.
“They want to buy players in order to do so. They are also moving to a new stadium.”
It is the second blow for Keegan with Bordeaux defender David Sommeil’s move up in the air.
Sommeil was left out of the team that defeated Montpelier at the weekend but Bordeaux are unhappy with the terms of the deal.
President Jean Louis Triaud said: “Between wanting a transfer and completing it, there is a huge gap.
“We are satisfied with neither the proposed financing nor bank guarantees. We are waiting an acceptable and solid offer from Manchester City.”
Fowler remains Keegan’s top target but any move seems unlikely until the player’s adviser returns from holiday on Wednesday.
Keegan has stated he won’t be rushed into spending his transfer budget.
He told BBC GMR: “We’re in the window and have nearly three weeks to get some players in – if we want them.
“But we had a very good team out there against Leeds and a very good bench. We’ve also got one or two coming back from injury.
“Unless they are going to make us better there is no point trying to buy anyone.”
