An eyewitness has caught footage of a waterspout, a swirling column of air and water mist, in the Shannon Estuary.

The waterspout formed while passengers were waiting for a ferry at Tarbert in Co Kerry on Thursday.

A funnel cloud usually forms during a thunderstorm or heavy shower, from a cumulonimbus cloud or a large cumulus cloud, when the atmosphere is unstable.

If a funnel cloud touches the ground it is generally regarded as a tornado. However, if the funnel cloud touches down at sea it is known as a waterspout.
