A young man has died following a collision in Co Galway on Sunday.

The incident involving a quad bike and a tractor and trailer happened at around 1.15pm on the R353 Gort to Portumna road in Derrybrien.

Units of Galway Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene, along with National Ambulance Service and Gardaí.

The HSE’s Athlone-based Emergency Aeromedical Service (EAS) air ambulance was also requested to respond and landed near the scene.

The driver of the quad bike, a man in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body has been taken to University Hospital Galway where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

Gardaí confirmed no other injuries were reported from the incident.

The road has been closed pending the completion of a technical examination of the scene, with local diversion in place.

Gardaí are appealing for any road users with camera (including dash cam) footage who were in the Gort, Loughrea and Derrybrien between 12.15pm and 1.15pm to come forward.
