A young mother has died after trying to rescue her son off the Cork coast.

The child suffered non life-threatening injuries in the incident on Sunday.

Bystanders called the emergency services after spotting the woman in the water at Ballycroneen strand in Cloyne, east Cork just after 1pm on Sunday.

She had been trying to save her son who had got into difficulty in the water.

A number of local lifeboat crews were tasked to the scene along with the Rescue 117 helicopter.

The 10-year-old boy managed to make it to nearby rocks where he was picked up by the coastguard helicopter.

His mother was taken from the water by the RNLI and was rushed to Cork University Hospital, where she died yesterday evening.

Her son was treated for shock and non life-threatening injuries
