A 19-year-old man allegedly attacked Quham Babatunde after he had been already stabbed three times and before being fatally stabbed once more in a melee in Dublin last month, a court has heard.
Mr Babatunde, a 34-year-old from Nigeria, died after being injured on Anne Street South in the city centre at around 3am on February 15th.
It happened after a row started among revellers leaving a Valentine's night gig.
Gardaí found him unresponsive, and he was rushed to St James's Street Hospital, where he died a short time later.
Unemployed Faraj Odukoya (19), of Hamlet Lane, Balbriggan, Dublin, was arrested on Monday and appeared at Dublin District Court on Tuesday.
He is charged with assault causing harm to Mr Babatunde at Anne Street South and his friend Adetola Adetuilehim at Duke Lane, and violent disorder.
Bail was set at €10,000 and the teenager, dressed in a grey and pink tracksuit and runners, was remanded in custody pending the approval of an independent surety.
Detective Garda Joseph Heaphy said Mr Odukoya made no reply when charged at Pearse Street Garda Station on Monday evening.
He voiced objections to bail based on the seriousness of the offence and fears the accused would not turn up to court if released.
Detective Garda Heaphy said the case stemmed from the investigation into the murder of Quham Babatunde. An investigation file would be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions with a recommendation for other serious charges.
Detective Garda Heaphy said the accused and associates attended the Twenty Two Nightclub on Anne Street South on Valentine's night at about 11.30pm.
They occupied a VIP booth until the venue closed at approximately 2.30am.
The court heard a large group of people emptied onto Anne Street South. Detective Garda Heaphy described the vast majority of them as innocent bystanders who went on to witness a "severe violent disorder incident and subsequent murder of Quham Babatunde".
At about 3am, a large fight broke out, allegedly instigated by Mr Odukoya's group, and it appeared from high-quality CCTV footage to have been random in nature.
Gardaí believed it was fuelled by intoxicants and "completely unprovoked".
It was claimed the accused and members of his group tried to conceal their identities when they left the venue.
Detective Garda Heaphy stated Mr Odukoya had his face covered and it was alleged that he acted aggressively and assisted his friends engage in acts of unlawful violence.
The court heard that Quham Babatunde had already been assaulted by friends of Mr Odukoya and stabbed three times in the back and abdomen by another close associate of the accused.
The detective alleged: "As Quham Babatunde recoils from the stabbings, he is attacked by Faraj Odukoya, who punches and kicks him and pulls his head down as he tries to get away from his attackers. Quham Babatunde is then stabbed one more time directly after Faraj Odukoya attacked him."
The court heard that Mr Babatunde fell on the street, and one of his friends, Adetola Adetuilehim, came to his aid. However, the accused and his friends allegedly "set upon", badly assaulted, and knocked Mr Adetuilehim unconscious.
CCTV showed him screaming and gesturing at Mr Adetuilehim, who was motionless on the ground, the court heard. The accused was said to have been in the footage pursuing people who had recorded the incident on their mobile phones.
The contested bail hearing was told that Mr Odukoya fled with associates to Dawson Street, where there were more violent incidents before they spent the rest of the night in a Dublin 4 hotel.
Defence counsel Kyle Talbot, instructed by solicitor Evan Moore, told the detective that his client would abide by the conditions.
The court heard the teenager did not work or get social welfare but was supported by his family.
The detective said the young man was interviewed four times and exercised his right to silence.
The teenager's family was in court, and counsel said his client would reside with them and obey a curfew and other conditions.
However, Detective Garda Heaphy was unsure whether Mr Odukoya lived with them full-time.
The court heard gardaí found his phone concealed there, but none of his clothing or other property was in the family house.
Mr Talbot, who described the incident as a melee, said his client intended to fight this case.
Judge Fiona Brennan remanded him in custody with consent to bail to appear at Cloverhill District Court on March 18th. He can only be released when a €10,000 surety has been approved, and he must then sign on daily at a garda station, remain contactable by phone, not contact the co-accused and notify gardai of any address change.
Legal aid was granted to the teenager who did not address the court.
Mr Babatunde had been residing in the Ballyogan accommodation centre in south Dublin pending his international protection application.
Six other men have come before the courts on charges connected to his murder or events in the area that night.
They remain in custody on remand.
Ryan Ndede (23), of Boroimhe Birches, Swords, Co Dublin, was arrested by the PSNI in Belfast after boarding a ferry to England. He was charged with Quham Babatunde's murder and held in custody after he appeared at Belfast Magistrate's Court on February 21st.
