Public transport is solution to Galway traffic problems, say critics to ring road proposal

Update 11.40am: Critics of a proposed Galway Ring Road say public transport is the solution to the city's traffic problems.

An application for a new bypass is being lodged this month after previous plans failed to get off the grounds.

A group of residents and politicians are now calling for proposals for a light rail system to be examined.

Independent TD Catherine Connolly has said that relying on roads and private cars to solve the problem is a "stale" idea.

"What we have said on this ... is that there is sustainable solutions to this with light rail being one of them."

Plans for a Galway ring road have been called "male" and "stale".

An application for a new route to relieve traffic jams in the city is being lodged this month.

Critics say other innovative solutions - like a light rail system - are needed instead.

Independent TD Catherine Connolly says previous attempts at creating bypasses have failed.

She said: "I describe it as a male, stale way of thinking that further roads and cars is the only way forward."
