PDs to seek stamp duty reforms if re-elected to govt
Progressive Democrats leader Michael McDowell has confirmed that his party will be seeking major changes to stamp duty on houses if forms part of the next government.
The party is understood to be considering a number of options such as abolishing stamp duty altogether, a major reduction in rates or spreading the payments out over the lifetime of a mortgage.
The options are being discussed at the PDs' pre-Dáil policy meeting in Dublin today.
Speaking at the meeting, Mr McDowell insisted that the reforms were not a gimmick to get votes and would be considered in light of their economic effect on the housing market.
