A man has been refused bail over a raid at a Dublin off-licence where masked men armed with a gun and wood pole allegedly threatened a young staff member.

Richard Keogh, 50, of Burnell Square, Dublin 13, was remanded in custody by Judge Michele Finan at Dublin District Court on Wednesday.

Garda Alan Davis objected to bail due to the seriousness of the case and said the accused was charged with robbery at Fine Wines, Burnell Square, on September 13th.

He told Judge Finan that two males entered the off-licence “with heads covered with balaclavas”.

“One was in possession of a black handgun, which he pointed at a member of staff behind the counter,” he alleged.

Garda Davis told the court that there was a demand for money and the second male waved a piece of wooden curtain pole at the young shop worker who was “in fear for his life”.

Some €230 was taken, and gardaí obtained CCTV evidence.

The garda alleged the accused removed a balaclava as he entered his apartment building.

Defence solicitor Eoin Lysaght submitted that the garda evidence had not reached the threshold for refusal of bail; however, the judge ruled against him.

She remanded the accused, who did not address the court, in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court next Tuesday for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Legal aid was granted.

The judge also made a direction for medical attention for Mr Keogh in custody.
