Man shot dead in west Dublin

A man believed to be in his early 20s has been shot dead in an overnight gun attack in west Dublin.

The shooting took place in the Harelawn Green area of Clondalkin, Dublin 22.

Gardaí responding to reports of a shooting at around 12.20am this morning discovered the man with what appeared to be gunshot wounds.

The area was immediately sealed off and the man was removed to Tallaght Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

A car which was later discovered on fire on Collinstown Crescent, Clondalkin is believed to have been used in the incident. This car has been preserved for technical examination.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who was in the Harelawn Green, or Collinstown Crescent areas last night or early this morning to contact them at Ronanstown Garda Station on 666 7700.

It is understood the victim, who was from north Clondalkin, was known to gardaí.

Local Sinn Féin councillor Matthew McDonagh said the area had seen too many gangland-style shootings over the years.

“These young victims, regardless of what they’re involved in, are just taken off the face of the earth, and for what?” Mr McDonagh said.

“So many families have lost people close to them and this incident is no different. Another family has been left devastated.”
