There will be an increase across all categories of motor tax and VRT.

Petrol and diesel, however, will not be increased.

From January, car registration plates will be 13 1 for the first six months and 13 2 for second six months of the year.

The Government are extending carbon tax to solid fuels over next two years on a phased basis - rate of €10 per tonne from Nay next and to €20 per tonne in May 2014.

The motor tax changes will affect each band as folllows:

Band A1 up €10 to €170

Band A2 up €20 to €180

Band A3 up €30 to €190

Band A4 up €40 to €200

Band B1 up €45 to €270

Band B2 up €55 to €280

Band C up €60 to €390

Band D up €89 to €570
