The Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, Wexford TD, Brendan Howlin, has called for an unequivocal written commitment from the Minister for Transport, Seamus Brennan, that the rail link to Wexford and Rosslare Harbour will be maintained and developed.
"Following a meeting with union members from Irish Rail today, I am convinced that there is a real threat to the line and that management want to close the line between Gorey and Rosslare Harbour and Waterford and Rosslare Harbour," he said.
"Such a development would be a disaster for the South East Region that has already suffered from significant neglect under Fianna Fail and the PDs.
"Apart from the implications for passengers, the closure of the line would also result in a huge amount of freight being transferred from the rail system onto an already inadequate road system.
"I have heard the denials from the Minister for Transport that any closures are planned, but I am afraid that verbal commitments from Fianna Fail Ministers have very little value just months after the most dishonest and duplicitous election campaign ever conducted.
"What is needed now to reassure the public in the South East is an unequivocal written commitment that the lines will be maintained and developed."
