An historic Co Wicklow hotel has been badly damaged by fire.

The blaze broke out in the kitchen of the Vale View hotel, between Woodenbridge and Avoca, and spread to the ballroom, which has been destroyed.

Other parts of the building have sustained smoke and water damage.

Established in 1825, the hotel has strong links with local gentry from surrounding estates such as Avondale.

The Parnell Room at the Vale View incorporates the windows of the prison cell in Mountjoy where Charles Stewart Parnell and Eamonn De Valera were incarcerated.
