Gardaí are hunting a driver after a young woman was mowed down in a hit-and-run incident in Co Donegal.

The young woman was walking close to Ardaravan Square on the Main Street in Buncrana when she was struck by a car between 4.30pm and 5pm.

The driver of the car initially stopped but then drove off again.

The victim was taken to hospital with injuries, but they are not understood to be life-threatening.

The vehicle has been described as being a dark-coloured saloon-type car.

Garda Sergeant Eunan Walsh said that given the time of day, the town would have been busy with Christmas shoppers.

He appealed for anybody with any information to come forward.

Gardaí are also examining CCTV footage of the incident.

A Garda spokesperson said "If anybody witnessed the incident we ask them to make contact with Gardaí. We believe that there were witnesses to this incident. The area was very busy at the time.

"If anybody travelled in that area who had a dash cam we ask them to make the footage available to us. Gardaí in Buncrana may be contacted on 074-9320540 in relation to this incident."
